The
Department of the Environment Community and Local Government
announced that Department Inspectors will carry out inspections on
every septic tank and sewage treatment system in the country. All
systems will be inspected regardless of when the system was installed.
Householders
with such systems will be required to register the details
of the system installed with their Local Authority and a national
register will be created by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
On
site wastewater systems will be required to meet the standards of
the 'Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems
Serving
Single Houses'
as issued by the EPA.
Householders
may incur significant costs to upgrade their system in
order to comply with the EPA standards
Planning
Permission is required to install a new wastewater treatment
system
